1. Müggelsee is Berlin’s largest lake and is located in the eastern part of the city.
2. The lake has an area of 8 km² and a maximum depth of 15 meters.
3. It is an artificial lake that was created when the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I had two rivers, the Müggelbach and the Dahme, dammed in 1876.
4. The average water temperature can reach up to 20°C in the summer months, while it drops to as low as 3°C in winter.
5. Müggelsee is a popular destination for swimmers and stand-up paddlers, but also for anglers fishing for carp, trout, rudd or perch.
6. Other attractions include the historic steamship Schwanenwerder, various windmills and numerous hiking trails in the surroundings of Grünau, Rahnsdorf and Köpenick.
7. Several islands lie in the lake, including Flakensee, where tern colonies have settled since 2004, hosting up to 2200 birds during the peak bird migration period.
8. To celebrate this achievement, a tern festival takes place every year in June at one of the beaches, where locals come together to admire these remarkable creatures that have made their home here.
